Origin
The earliest power reserves appeared in marine clocks centuries ago, when ships sailing at sea relied on accurate navigation clocks to measure longitude and ensure safe navigation. Because of the clocks powered by mechanical devices at that time, if the winding is not timely, the running time will be inaccurate or even stop. As a result, watchmakers began to seek a device that could visually display energy.

The working principle of the power reserve display is to provide an intuitive indication of the energy of the watch by measuring the remaining power of the mechanical watch. And this indicating device usually opens a fan-shaped window on the surface of the clock, and indicates the margin with a pointer.
Power Reserve Judgment Criteria
Nowadays, the power reserve is undoubtedly one of the hallmarks of the watchmaker’s craftsmanship, just like the tourbillon. There are two main criteria for evaluating the power reserve in the watch industry: one is long power, that is, the longer the power reserve to maintain the watch’s time, the better. The second is that the more uniform the rate of energy decrement, the better. If a watch depletes its energy faster and faster, it will go inaccurately. Therefore, the longer the energy stored in the watch, the more uniform the attenuation, the higher the requirements for watchmaking technology, and the more difficult it is to make the watch.
